Low-Cost Food Service Thinks Green

On the way back from my afternoon break at Tim Hortons last Friday (x-large green tea + triple chocolate cookie if you’re wondering), I noticed this site along 104 Avenue near 140 Street:

This is Quest Food Exchange, which assists low-income individuals through their food exchange program.  Quest provides meal planning, budgeting and access to nutritious food, and they help individuals become self-sufficient. The Surrey store above has affordable fruits and vegetables, milk, bread, canned goods, desserts, meat, vitamins, and household accessories.

What’s also notable about their society is their environmental awareness.  They’ve collaborated with EcoAction Canada to reduce greenhouse emissions, and also compost and recycle to reduce their own waste.   Here are a couple of impressive stats about the society’s work:

  • Rescued $3.9 million dollars worth of food
  • Diverted 366 cubic yards of recycled material from the landfills
  • 140,337 shopping trips to Quest’s three low-cost food stores by our clients
